TOWNSVILLE – URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT:

In an effort to make a difference for your whole community, we are attempting to “harness the power” of the Townsville region, to see how many are willing to take a moment or two to help your neighbours and fellow residents who are going through traumatic claims situations.

If you took photos or video during the flood event on your phones or cameras, that can be identified by time and date, are you willing to send them through?

We are working with a number of stakeholders to try to compile the most comprehensive and exhaustive list of photo evidence, so we can map out the entire event. We would ideally want to make this evidence available to anyone who then needed to access it for their claim – whether to get another hydrologist report etc, or just to show their insurer/hydrologist additional information about the water levels throughout the event.

Thank you to the people who have been in contact with us. At the moment, we need donations of non-perishable food items and bottled water. Our depot at 11-13 Lorna Court is open and we have 300 hampers for families needing urgent assistance. Please only travel if safe to do so. We will continue working with local authorities in the coming days to provide assistance to those who need it. For people in parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.

Issued at 12:17 pm Wednesday, 30 January 2019.
Very Intense thunderstorms occurring from Toolakea to Upper Black River

Weather Situation: Rain with embedded thunderstorms, which are producing localised intense rainfall, are occurring across Herbert and Lower Burdekin, more specifically a swath from Toolakea and Upper Black River. Heavy and intense rainfall may extend over Townsville later this afternoon.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Townsville, Palm Island, Ingham, Cardwell, Abergowrie and Lucinda.

Toolakea has recorded 133mm in under 2 hours
Upper Black River has recorded 158mm in under 2 hours.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

Lower Herbert Neighbourhood and Marine Watch

As everyone should be aware considerable rain and wind thrashed our community last night. Rainfall records indicate some 630mm since yesterday. Flash flooding continues this morning with roads closed throughout the Lower Herbert and north and south of Ingham. Please do not drive around unless you have to. Some of the roads are clearly flooded and some of the others which seem to have low levels of water have not been inspected as yet. As well as monitoring the flash flooding, Emergency Services and Disaster Management are watching river hight levels for rises. The strong winds may have made structures and trees unstable. Be warned, if you receive an infringement for disobeying a road closed sign, it’s the fault of the person behind the steering wheel and feet on the pedals. Please make the right decision don’t disobey road closed signs. Take care and stay safe

This month, the Insurance Council will be in North Queensland hosting insurance information sessions for the community. The meeting will cover many aspects of insuring homes and property in the North of Australia, including:
