North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance Response
“Senior Field Adjuster”
I have been working at North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance full-time (More than 8 years)
– If you can get your work done and stay organized, the work life balance can be very accommodating ie flexible working hours.
– Field Adjuster position comes with a company car that can be used for personal use
– The claims staff and managers are good people and easy to get along with.
– Very knowledgeable claims managers.
– The starting pay isn’t anything amazing, however there are typically annual raises, so after you’ve been here for some time, the salary begins to become more favorable.
– If you respond to a catastrophe area, you are entitled to additional pay for the time you spend in the storm affected area.
– Great health insurance benefits
– The best pro is likely that this company offers a fully funded pension. You are vested at 5 years time. If you stay with them long enough, you will be greatly rewarded for it.
– This isn’t exactly specific to Farm Bureau, but for anyone considering a job working insurance claims, understand that claims are claims. What I mean is, it doesn’t matter where you work, dealing with the public can be very taxing at times, especially when the people you’re dealing with have recently been involved in a situation that now requires them to contact an insurance carrier (car accident, storm damage to home, etc.) You need to be able to leave work at the door when you leave for the day.
– The lack of technology has been a problem for as long as I have been employed here. The company has implemented a new claims system within the last 2-3 years that has at least improved this field, though they are likely still trailing most other insurance carriers claims’ systems.
– This company is not a nationwide company. Each state Farm Bureau is an independent entity. Therefore, when a disaster strikes (hurricane, major hail storm) there is not a specific group of catastrophe only adjusters ready to respond. Each claims office across the state has to send adjusters to a response area which leaves the remaining staff to pick up the additional workload of those that have had to respond. The company is reactive instead of proactive, and has yet to demonstrate the capability to properly respond to natural disasters. When one of these storms hit, expect to work weekends and longer shifts for weeks or months at a time whether you actually go to the storm affected area or stay behind.
– In the claims hierarchy, there is not a lot of room for advancement unless you want to relocate, mainly to the corporate office in Raleigh, NC.
– Workload. There are many areas across the state of NC experiencing growth. More growth means more policies written, which means more claims. Senior Management has done a poor job in making sure there are enough claims adjusters in these growing areas to keep up with the amount of claims being filed, so at times an individual’s workload can be high.
– The company splits the state into 3 regions, each with its own regional manager. There are multiple claims offices within each of these 3 regions – 18 or 19 total across the state. None of these offices work claims the same exact way as each other. There is no uniformity or continuity on how to “work a claim” from one office to the next.
– This company has not yet specialized its adjusters yet. They are dinosaurs in this regard, as they employ multi-line adjusters. You will work property files, casualty files, handle injury claims, etc.
Advice to Management
– Evaluate areas in the state with rapid growth and approve the hiring of more adjusters to keep up with the inevitable workload. Seriously – hire more adjusters.
– Join the rest of the insurance industry in specialization, so instead of each adjuster being ok at a lot of things, they can be great at a few things. Implement a specific set of instructions as to how claims should properly be handled to create a unified response.
– Continue to look into technological advances that may be able to assist the company.
– Consider offering higher salaries to adjusters that are still multi-line adjusters.
